At the simplest level, a Muslim (مسلم) is any man or woman who choose to make and accept the following proclamation:
"I bear witness that there no deity except God; and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of God."

This proclamation is known as Shahada (الشهادة). The following is the Arabic text of the Shahada:
| أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدا رسول الله
|
Shahada has to be proclaimed in proper Arabic. The following is the Arabic transliteration of the Shahada:
"Ash'hadu an la ilaha illa Allah wa ash'hadu anna Muhammadan rasoulu Allah."
